Aptiva Health’s new Concussion & Sports Medicine Center is now open on Newburg Road. The new facility offers cutting-edge, state of the art technology to local athletes, including injury prevention, sports performance training and post-concussive treatment.Simon Hoehn, Director of Rehab said these services will be a blessing to the community.”People are still getting told after getting a concussion to sit in a dark room for a week and that’s just not good therapy,” said Hoehn. “Who feels good after sitting in a dark room for a week? Nobody. So we wanted to provide the best treatment we could get.”Aptiva is offering an HSAA sports physical and baseline ImPACT testing for any youth athlete for $30.The ImPACT test assesses basic brain function in athletes. It is the gold standard for professional and collegiate athletes.Collecting that data upfront helps tailor treatments specific to the athlete.”That’s one of the biggest challenges now is a patient doesn’t get a baseline test, they have a concussion, they get in a month later for treatment and now we can only track progress from a month on,” Hoehn said. “And we can’t see where they actually were before the injury.”For a full list of services offered, click here. The new facility is also home to one of the only Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy chambers in Louisville. The air pressure inside is raised to a level that is higher than normal air pressure. The increased air pressure in the chamber helps the lungs collect more oxygen. HBOT accelerates the body’s natural healing process by increasing the amount of oxygen in the blood. The body needs oxygen to heal itself.”It gives you more oxygen so your body can do its job better,” Hoehn. said. “It can recover faster, heal quicker, it helps the brain heal faster, it helps tissue heal better so when you have more oxygen than you carry you just have better responses to treatment.”HBOT can be used alone or with other medical treatments, such as medications or surgery. Most people receive hyperbaric oxygen therapy on an outpatient basis for 1 to 2 hours each session. At the Concussion & Sports Medicine Institute, they utilize a two-person hard-shell hyperbaric chamber that goes to 3 ATA.ATA is the term or unit used to describe hyperbaric pressure in millimeters or inches of mercury (mmHg, inHg), pounds per square inch (psi), feet or meters of seawater (fsw, msw), and atmospheres absolute (ATA).
